How to improve SEO using WordPress category and tag prefixes 3

What are category prefixes and tag prefixes?

Category prefixes and tag prefixes are parts of URLs that are inserted into the category pages and tag pages of a WordPress site. If left blank here, then by default WordPress uses category as the category prefix and tag as the tag prefix.

For example, after reading “delicious eats near me,” you’re going to make a website about food recipes. You can add different cuisines, such as vegan cuisine, Cantonese cuisine and so on. If you are going to introduce a series of vegan recipes, you can create a special vegan cuisine category, Let a food website is using the recipe as the category name, then this is the URL of this category:

Similarly, you can also set a variety of labels for each dish recipes, for example, we add a label called “pepper”, then the label URL is like this:

Improve website SEO using keywords as Category prefixes

The default category prefixes and tag prefixes allow visitors who are familiar with WordPress to understand what they are about to visit at a glance, but they are not much help in the search engine optimization of a website. Therefore, we recommend using the keywords of the site to replace the default category and tag, which can improve the ranking of the site in search engine results.

We mentioned earlier on the food recipes website, which describes the practice of many different kinds of food, then we can use the vocabulary associated with it as a Category prefix. For example, we can use these keywords

  • Recipes
  • How to do
  • Practice

The first word, the recipe is the best. Because many will search for recipes on the web, “chicken recipes”, “recipes for wives and lungs”, ” chicken stew mushroom recipes” and so on. Therefore, if the URL contains a recipe for this keyword, you can improve the ranking of your site.

The second word, how to do it, is often searched for a keyword. For example, ”how to do back to the pot,“ how to do braised ribs ” and so on. Now the search engine can be very intelligent to the user wants the answer. In another case, if your domain name already contains the keywords of the recipe, then try to use how to do as a Category prefix.

The third word, practice, is the search volume is relatively high and more suitable for a keyword.”The practice of oil splashing noodles”,” the practice of yogurt ” and so on.

If we use the recipe keywords to do the category prefix, then vegan cuisine category URL from

It becomes…

Use keywords as tag prefix to improve website SEO

The tag prefix is the same as the category prefix. Tag prefix appears in the URL tag. Select the appropriate keyword as a tag prefix. This can effectively improve the site’s SEO.

The difference is that when considering the label prefix, more need to be careful. This is because the tag range of the site tends to be large and contains more categories of content and also more clutter. For example, in your food recipes website, the food category can be roughly divided into vegan cuisine, northeastern cuisine, Northwest cuisine, and tags include Vientiane, there may be the main material (chicken and duck fish), auxiliary materials (oil salt sauce and vinegar), practice (frying cooking), cookware (pots and pans) and so on.

When choosing a label prefix, we both want the word more professional, so as to fit our website; and hope that the word more common, so as to cover all the labels. Therefore, this usually requires you to think carefully about finding the label prefix that is right for your site.

In our case, we try to avoid keywords that have already appeared in the domain name and in the category prefix. I thought about it, and probably can also use such words as ”gourmet“, ”eat” and so on as a prefix to the tag.

Can we really improve search engine optimization?

The use of appropriate category prefixes and tag prefixes is a good practice. Although not necessarily have a significant improvement on the site of search engine optimization. But it will help for sure. Besides, modifying this is very simple, why not?
